Book Review: Her Last Whisper (Dr. Charlotte Stone Book 3) by Karen Robards

I really enjoyed Her Last Whisper and it was great to catch up from where Book2, The Last Victim ended. The third addition to the series has Serial Killer expert, Dr Charlotte Stone recovering from her near death experience with her sexy as hell badass Ghost, Michael Garland, firmly (no further than fifty feet) by her side. If you’ve been reading the series you’d know that on his violent death while in prison he was on his way to Hell a.k.a Spooksville (Book1, The Last Kiss Goodbye) when his soul became entangled with the Charlotte who had been interviewing him.

They remain a strong team in Book 3 as they travel to Las Vegas to assist in a case where a number of women have gone missing. Once in Vegas we start getting pieces of Michael’s dark past which until now remains mostly a mystery. As Charlotte’s voodoo priestess friend, Tamsyn warns, “He wound up in The Dark Place for a reason.”

So they are back, together and ever-bickering again. The sniping and references to Michael’s past manwhore-ness was amusing. Charlotte spends a lot of her time in this novel fighting her growing feelings for Michael and trying (unsuccessfully) to work up more interest with the handsome, honourable and very alive FBI agent, Tony Bartoli. A difficult task with Michael offering unappreciated side commentary and grim silences as the invisible love interest. My only wish was that with opportunity being slim, that the love scenes could have been off-the-charts steamier to make it really count. For reasons I can’t pinpoint, I felt love scenes in the first two books were just that little hotter. But I suppose it served to highlight just how sexually frustrating it would be to have an affair with “ectoplasm”. So I did wish Charlotte spent less energy with her internal battle with her growing feelings for her Ghost lover and more on learning to astral travel for the sake of sexy times! Regardless, I do love a jealous sexually frustrated Hero and continue to wonder how Karen Robards will solve this impossible romance.

As with any romances featuring the paranormal, you MUST suspend your disbelief – unless you believe in ghosts of course – but expect an engaging read. This series remains on my auto-buy list purely because I’ve become so fond of Michael but in this instance I received an ARC (my first!). I should mention that Karen Robards has been a much loved author of many keepers on my shelf for years and she did a wonderful job in continuing this new series. Book 3 ends in a cliff hanger but I like the direction she is going with it!
